I have 0520 wide band radio, just got the software and cable but am
not able to read the radio. I suspect that it is a serial or
processor timing issue. After at least 50 attempts, it did read once
to 100% but returned a #91 error; Data Object Variable no Set.

I could use some advise and have a couple of questions and then I'll
outline what I have and done for 3-4 hours today. Up til today, I
have no experience programming Midland LMR hardware.

Is the most current software 4.1 for DOS and 2.1.4 for windoZe?
Are there any special serial port settings other than the default? I
did see a tip on setting the port to 1200, FIFO buffers off or minimum?

No need to read past this point if you are not interested in
programming problems. :-)

I have a P3, 600 Mhz running both windoZe XP Pro and can boot up pure
V6.22 MS-DOS. System runs Motorola RSS just fine and some of that 30
year old software is finicky also. I have two radios, one installed
and operational on 6 meters and the other fresh off Ebay. Both exibit
the same issues outlined below.

I wrote this Email to another fellow and pass it along here to save a
few keystrokes.
--------------------
It does seem like a timing issue with the old box which is a 600 meg
P3. I say that now because it did just read a few minutes ago finally
(this in windows with the windows software 2.1.4) to 100% but came up
with an error code #91; data object variable not set. That is the
only time it's read in about 50 tries using all the oddball ways as
detailed below.

I don't know if this cable supports handshaking, XOR or nothing but I
tried them all. I also saw a reference to Version 3 software. I
don't know if that was an error or if there is something else out
there besides, Win 2.1.4 and DOS 4.1.

Anyway, here's what I've done up to this point:

I tried the DOS window, with and without Moslo. I tried DOS. I tried
COM1 and COM2 with default settings (9600, 8,1,n) and then at 1200, no
FIFO per a tip included with the software. I then tried all sorts of
parity, speeds, Handshaking, FIFO settings and the same reactions.

I was using an old 600 P3 box that works fine with the Motorola RSS
including the very picky R-100 and it works well. So doubt it's the
computer, especially when I used Moslo but I'm not 100% sure either.

I used MS-DOS 6.22 for the the 4.1 DOS (21-Dec-1992) software and then
the 2.1.4 windows software in Windows on XP Pro. Like I said, the
computer works well with Moto RSS but not so with STII.

I will say that when I power up the radio after inserting the 10pin, I
get the SLI, a high beep followed by a low (I think) and it continues
to flash. It will read almost immediately as 3% complete and then in
about 5 seconds, just ends and stays on the same window. If I go to
edit, I must enter the: 70-0562C to get any farther. I would expect
that on a successful read of the radio, I'd be offered another
selection for editing or viewing what was just read. Not sure what to
expect as I don't have a sample cfg (ST2 I think) file.

Another tip said be sure that the radio is not in scan mode prior to
reading. I did check that and that wasn't the problem.

I do power off the radio, plug in the 10 pin, run the software, ready
it for reading, power on the radio, wait for the SLI on the channel
LED, wait for the beeps, the SLI is flashing, then I tell the sotware
to Upload (read the radio). I get a quick message just right of the
READ icon, it sez something about standby for read, It shows 3% read
and then drops back to the normal RADIO screen within 5 seconds. This
is windows.

In DOS, when telling it to read, I large banner comes up and sez
reading, wait two minutes and then almost immediately, get a "unable
to send start command" back. I've tried using all sorts of Moslo
parameters to tweak the CPU timing issues but haven't found the answer
or combination.

All these gyrations on two different radios, one which is in service
and on 6 meters and the other a fresh bought Ebay radio that powers up
and comes up on channel one.

So that's my story to this point. I don't have a handy second old
computer with DOS and a hardware serial port.
-----------------------------

That's my sad story...thanks...Mike

hello,

I'm having the same problems with the programming of my 70-
0520CWB. Are you using the software from the first link in the file
section? Also do you start with a fresh file or do you mod the
orginal programming? any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm using another source, the versions I included in my original post.
I didn't get anything from the files here.

I did get a copy of the extender software though. One uses the same
cable to program the extender by pulling a cover. I haven't tried
that yet until I get a good read from the radio.

REMEMBER the  control head and power output determine the last 2 digits of the model in programming. Do not take it lightly!

If you have the DOS software, it would be best to boot into DOS 5 or 6xx if possible….XP does not talk directly to serial ports and that can be an issue. Win2000 and earlier Windows does not have that problem and can control the serial port directly.

Yup, I know about using 70-0562C in my case.

But until I read I'm not seeing where this comes into play unless I'm
missing the boat.

Motorola RSS is similar and I always read the radio first, program the
file and then send the info back to the radio. Bad things can happen
to program from a base that didn't come from the exact radio.

I've tried both pure DOS V6.22, a XP DOS window for the DOS software
and the Windows software. All fail. I've used 3 different computers,
2 different programming cables and 2 different CSB's, one of which is
in service working normally.

Are you using a serial to USB adapter because your CPU does not have serial ports?

What were the operating systems, CPU type and speed of the 3 computers?

Were the programming cables verified to work on another computer/operating system? If not,  are the programming cables OEM Midland, homebrew,  or aftermarket such as RF Guys or Greene County Communications?

Thanks for the responses from everyone on this thread. I've tried to
keep my follow-ups brief by way of limited quoting and my lack of
thanks to each and all shows. But I appreciate it.

I've spent many hours on this and I think I have a fair hand with DOS,
COM ports and general two-way programming. But I'm not yet successful.

So based on my additional below, I'm waiting for my old 486-20 laptop
which I use for finicky Motorola radios and will give it a try with
that. That's 4 computers, two cables, and two radios. Hard to
believe that it's this difficult based on what other's experiences
have shown.

No, my two slowest boxes have one or two hardware COM ports. My
newest laptop does not and I did use a USB to serial port adapter
twice in my first two of a hundred tries. I knew it was not likely to
work so I tossed it out early and hauled out the older and bigger
slower monsters and balanced them on the roof of the car.

#1) 2.4 gig laptop Windows Vista, no COM port; eliminated immediately.
#2) 1.6 gig P4 Windows XP Pro, 2 COM ports
#3) 600 meg, P3 Windows XP Pro

2 and 3 were tried with DOS 6.22 pure boot discs, with and without
Moslo to slow the CPU down to 4.77 meg.

I changed the COM port setting from the default 9600, 8N1 to
everywhere from 600 baud to 19200 using all combinations of parity,
stop bits and handshaking.

Homebrew Ribbed cable by Bill Roth, he sells them on Ebay and it
appears to be a very nicely crafted cable set. He tested the
original cable before shipping on his 70-051C and it was working. He
sent me another, checked it first and I have the same exact read
errors with my two computers and two CWB's. He checked the cable that
I returned to him and it checked out fine. He uses version 2.1.4 on
two Win boxes, a 600 and a 1.6 gig CPU's, one on XP Pro and the other
Win 2000. So I don't think it's the cables.

Mike,

P3 Win2K or XP seems to work well with the windows version but P4 or 1 gig plus speeds are where the problems start.  It works for some people, others it doesn't.  Your 600 meg P3 should work with windows software and the default com port settings (9600, 8, N, 1).  If your 486 machine won't read the radio, let me know and I'll loan you one of my programmers to try.

Chris...thanks for the offer of your files (follow-up email enroute).

Bob,

Now there's a wrinkle, the Pentium variable. And nice to confirm that
the default 9600 etc is appropriate. Hopefully the answer will
surface with my dinosaur saving the day. Extremely generous off on
the loaner if all else fails.

Rest assured, follow-up to the group here for that long and dangling

Just a couple comments here - the 70-0520CWB that I bought off of ebay
a while back had apparently been blanked somehow before it was retired
from commercial service - I had exactly the same results trying to
read it. In the end, I had to write my own program from scratch to
get it to do anything. Unlike the Motorola radios, there is not
really any alignment or tuning info in the program on these radios, so
you can write your own. I suggest that you use the windows version of
the software (there is a link to it in the Links section), read
through the programming manual that is included in the download, and
start building your own program for the basic radio - I doubt if there
is anything in the radio to read at this point. Once you have the
basic radio tuned up and running, then you can add the programming to
control the crossband repeater (the instructions are in the files
section). Take it slow and pay attention to what he manual tells you
and you will get there. It took me several tries to get rid of all
the error codes (they are listed in the programming manual also).
Since you don't have anything to start with from reading the radio,
you will need to "build" your model number based on the equipment you
have according to the information in the programming manual. Just
remember to use the C model instead of the CWB if you are trying to
move it to 6 meters.

Dan,

A very reasoned approach, starting a file from scratch. But here's
why I'm resisting that, at least at up to this point.

I have two radios, one programmed, installed in the trunk and fully
operational (not the extender though). Because it works, I know it's
not blanked and if I can't read what's in it, I surely don't wish to
write to it.

Now the other radio, Radio 2, though not installed, I have tested and
found that it has one channel (46.00, carrier squelch) and 148.60 with
PL on the extender's receiver only. I've put it in repeater and it
works fine both directions including the transpond Tx and the annoying
beep beep beep from the speaker to drive the operator out of the car
or to deactivate the repeater function. So I know it's not been
blanked or otherwise boogered. I just got another CWB today but I
didn't try any programming on it but it does power up, POST and audio
and squelch are fine. I'm sure it's a working radio.

I may try that build a file first approach later. I surely don't want
to make any of these radios brain dead while I still have some options.

Thanks again...Mike

Chris,
I don't want to nag but I was wondering if you had a chance to send a
copy of your 6 meter programming?

  Thanks

Mike,
When using the software, don't forget to change the band limits...depending
on the software version (DOS or Windows) you use, the STII upper limit for
lowband must be changed manually (as noted in the software notes in the
FILES area). If you try to load an out of band freq, it will give you an
error.

If the radio is already programmed, you need to check it 1st before trying
to move it (always a good radio rule ;)...if it aint working now, it will
cause you major headaches later. If its not programmed, I suggest putting an
inband freq like 45 or 48MHz and then checking the radio there before
reprogramming it to 6.

The STII is an excellent radio for 6FM..I have been running one since
1994....and with 320 channel capacity, it can handle every rptr channels
known to man and on 6, you need that (thanks to no national agreement on
band planning.....thank you ARRL for "accepting" the CA plan after 10+ yrs
of 1MHz offset...oh yeah that was smart! The Midlands make the 500kHz split
obsolete and makes the 1.7Mhz split easy ;) I have my STII set up with GRP 1
for -1MHz offsets, GRP 2 for -1.7MHz and GRP 3 sets all channels
active....BUT the band hasn't opened up for me to access any 1.7 splits
(afaik yet)..The Deluxe head is nice but not needed....but sure makes
changing CTCSS tones easy on the fly.

When programming, I use the channel number to match the rptr freq (01=53.01
out, 03=53.03 out, etc..for the 1.7Mhz split, I put them in 101-199...52.525
can go on 100 or any channel that's empty...as long as you remember what it
is...the old STIs with channel 00 made that easy to use for 525 simplex)

Thanks for the idea but don't wish to try to write to it until I can
read the radio. The only place I see to insert the model number is to
create the file and ultimately write to the radio. Reading of the
radio doesn't ask for the model number at least in my case as it
always fails before completing the read. There were maybe 3 times out
100 tries where the read went to 100% but failed with a #91 error.

So I'm waiting for my wayward old 486-20 computer to come home for
another try.

James et al,

I have put up a couple of sample "codeplugs" for the 0520CWB for Radio
ID of 0562C. These came from the fellow who programmed my working
CWB. I'll also add the CWB programming software for the radio along
with the extender programmer. I believe they are here in files but
it's tough to be sure with so many all in the same directory.

Hmmm WB5xxx?? I wonder if those are my original files?????

If 01 = 53.01 -1 and 03 = 53.03 -1, etc...and it has the 1.7Mhz splits in
the 100 or 200 range (x01 = 53.01 -1.7) and maybe some oddballs as well (I
cant recall which range I put them in), they're mine!

James, have not been able to pull them off the server (yet).....I'll look at
these and if they are my originals, no problem..if not, I'll send ya mine
direct...

Chris
WB5ITT (not WB5xxx ;)

Hmmm WB5xxx?? I wonder if those are my original files?????

If 01 = 53.01 -1 and 03 = 53.03 -1, etc...and it has the 1.7Mhz splits in
the 100 or 200 range (x01 = 53.01 -1.7) and maybe some oddballs as well (I
cant recall which range I put them in), they're mine!
